What is Olympic Weightlifting?

Our sport is so-named as it is one of the long-established disciplines in the Olympic Games. It requires strength, power, speed, & mobility, which distinguishes it from the more strength-based sport of Powerlifting.

It comprises TWO main lifts of a weighted barbell-

SNATCH: Lifting from floor STRAIGHT to overhead

CLEAN AND JERK: 'Cleaning' from floor to shoulders,

THEN 'Jerking' to overhead

At a competitive level, athletes are grouped according to gender and bodyweight category, having three chances at each lift type to achieve the highest combined weights total for both lifts, in their group.

Can anyone learn Olympic Lifting?

Yes, anyone can learn the sport, although certain parts of the movements may limit those with mobility or health issues. We are very happy to discuss any medical limitations or health concerns you may have before commencing sessions with us, to help us to ensure your safety.

Support is given to focus on individuals' achievable goals, and that includes from Beginner level and how to hold the empty bar, right up to more technical assessment and programming for more Advanced lifters.

All sessions are coached in a safe & supportive environment by a fully-licensed and experienced BWL Level 2 Coach. Beginners are carefully introduced to the lift basics and component drills before progressing to heavy weights.

What can I expect from an Olympic Weightlifting Class?

BEGINNER CLASSES will start right from the basics, introducing you to the components of the two Olympic lifts in stages, and helping you build up to the full movements from floor to overhead once those techniques are mastered.

For some, this may be a slow process as you experience new ranges of movement, but others may develop their technical ability faster.  Everyone is different, but either way you will be supported to progress at a comfortable rate for you.

Just broomsticks or empty bars are used as a  starting point until both you and your coach feel confident to add weights to the bar, starting light.

There will be warm-up, warm-down and stretching activities to improve mobility and protect muscles.

Sessions usually alternate between the Snatch and Clean & Jerk lifts each week- it is normal for lifters to struggle with one more than the other- so don't worry!

Feedback is welcome at any point in sessions, should you feel uncomfortable or uncertain at all.

We hope soon to be introducing the sport to local schools in Flintshire too, to engage more young people.

We pride ourselves in nurturing a respectful and friendly ethos, with plenty of encouragement and cheers for each other's progress, however small!

INTERMEDIATE SESSIONS are a progression from the basics, for lifters who feel reasonably confident in the general movements, but perhaps would like to fine-tune their techniques a little further to increase weights.

These sessions are ideal for Crossfitters who want to master the technique and raise their 1RMs.

Each lifter can use the sessions to practise elements they may be hoping to improve, and recommended accessory exercises, with the guidance and support of their coach, who will assess their progress.

Assessment & Online-Programming is also available for Intermediate (and above) lifters to follow to help achieve their goals in home-/open gym settings.

Dress Requirements

Basic gym wear is all that is required for both classes, but Intermediates especially may choose to wear their own weightlifting shoes and lifting belts if they wish.

Your coach is happy to advise on these if you're not sure what you may need.

"We all need coaching ...

Investing your time and money in a coach that specialises in something

you lack confidence in.

This is a fantastic investment

and something in which

your clients can

benefit from.”

I would definitely recommend this introduction to Olympic Lifting techniques class!

I have previously done some Oly Lifting which I learnt from Crossfit but wanted to go back to basics and this course was ideal. It stripped back the movements and focused on technique over weight on the bar.

These are not intensive sessions so they slipped into my current training split without impacting what I was already doing. The course managed to have a full range of ages, genders and abilities and this made for an accepting environment to learn without any pressure. 10/10
